Once On This Island
Upon setting foot in the theatre, audience members are greeted by lush vegetation, in-the-round seating, and sand covering the set, essentially transporting them to the Caribbean for this story. This year, Once On This Island celebrated its return to Broadway with a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival along with another seven nominations, including one for Hailey Kilgore-s stunning portrayal of Ti Moune. A bittersweet tale of romance set in the French Antilles, Once On This Island combines elements of The Little Mermaid and Romeo and Juliet with Caribbean folklore. When the poor Ti Moune rescues Daniel Beauxhomme from a storm, she nurses him back to health—and falls in love in the process. But when she follows him back to his high-society home, she discovers that Daniel is pledged to another. Heartbroken and guided by the mighty island gods (played by Darlesia Cearcy, Glee's Alex Newell, American Idol's Tamyra Gray, and Cats' Quentin Earl Darrington), Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.
